Auntie Says

Let's Go for a Walk

A picture book about a walk around the neighborhood — two little girls, two dogs, and all the small habits that keep everybody safe. Written for little ones, and for the grown-ups holding their hand.

Cover of Auntie Says: Let's Go for a Walk — Auntie kneeling on a sidewalk with two young girls, a stroller, and two dogs.

Why I wrote this book

Road safety doesn't start with an engineering study. It starts earlier than that — on a sidewalk, with a toddler who wants to run ahead, and a grown-up who says wait. Those first small lessons stay with kids. I wanted to put them in a book that families would actually want to read together.

My nieces are my world. Mila got to meet Grandpa. Finley, whose middle name is Oakes after our dad, did not.

I want my dad to be part of their life. I want him to influence them for good. And I never want what happened to him to happen to anyone else — especially my babies.

“The streets can't talk like me and you…
but look and listen.
They'll tell you what to do.” FROM AUNTIE SAYS

A look inside

One whole page, so you get the idea. The rest is for the book.

The family dancing across a crosswalk as a car waits.
One stripe, two stripe, three stripe, four we dance across the magic floor!
The dedication

There's not a street I cross without thinking of you.

I love you, Dad.

May your grandbabies hold a piece of you forever.

This book exists because of John H. Oakes Jr. — read about him and the others we've lost.
